Set in 1860's Paris, Therese (Elizabeth Olsen) is a sexually repressed young woman trapped into a loveless marriage by her domineering aunt (Jessica Lange). She meets her husband's alluring friend, Laurent (Oscar Isaac), and is drawn into an illicit affair that leads to tragic consequences.
